The Naturehike Opalus 3 is a 3-man, 3 season tunnel tent with a similar design to the Hilleberg Nallo 4 GT.

Nallo 4 GT tunnel design (Similar to Opalus 3)

It has 3 poles which insert within sleeves along the rainfly, bend into hoops, and then draw out into the tunnel shape - with stakes and guylines then used to secure it upright.

A 3-man inner pitches simultaneously with the rainfly, filling half the interior space, with the remaining space creating a large vestibule with 2 doors.

This shows this tent being pitched.

Tunnel tent pros:
  • Provides a large amount of space for the weight
  • Packs up compactly (less poles)
  • Typically has a large vestibule area
... which might suit:
  • Those wanting the largest backpacking tent at the lightest weight
  • Couples or families who prefer one, larger tent
  • Groups who want to minimize overall weight (i.e take fewer tents)
  • Those expecting lengthy periods inside their tent (e.g. persistent rain)
  • Those with gear that should be kept out of the weather
  • Those bringing dogs
  • Bike campers (compact packed size & can shelter a bicycle)

Other tunnel tent pros:
  • Lighter and more compactly stored than a similarly-sized dome tent
  • More weather resistant than a tarp or trekking pole tent
  • Consistent headroom along the center line of the tent
  • The vestibule area has many possible uses. e.g.:
    • Gear storage
    • Cooking
    • Drying clothes
    • Living space
    • Sleeping space for extra people
Some cons:
  • Requires stakes and guylines to stand upright - which is ot ideal on rocky or sandy ground
  • Less weather resistant than a dome tent - especially in swirly or lateral wind

Specifications:

  • Good quality included guylines and groundhog clone stakes
  • Included groundmat that covers the base of the inner
  • The rainfly can be pitched standalone

Cons
  • ~3kg is relatively heavy
    • Less stakes and guylines could be used in moderate condions
    • Could omit/replace the groundmat (e.g use polycro groundsheet)
  • Low height at sides and the ends
  • Inner can't be pitched standalone (nowhere for the poles to attach)
  • Sil-nylon inner floor might need some silicone "grip" applied to prevent mats sliding if pitched on a slope

In comparison to the Nallo 4 GT, the Opalus 3:
  • Is smaller - being a 3-man tent (vs a 4-man tent)
  • Uses less rugged materials
    • 7001 poles vs DAC featherlite NSL poles
    • 20D (PU4000MM) rainfly vs 30D (PU5000MM) "Kerlon 1200" rainfly
    • 3-season inner with 20D floor/walls and mesh roof vs a 4-season inner with 70D floor and 30D solid walls (with removable panels on door and vents)
  • Is ~600g lighter (~3kg vs 3.6kg)
  • Includes 16 stakes (vs 12) and a groundmat that covers the base of the inner
  • costs ~$760 USD less
